Review: Samyang 135mm f/2 ED UMC

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

Friend of the site Dustin Abbott has completed his review of the brand new Samyang 135mm f/2 ED UMC manual focus lens. Dustin came away thoroughly impressed with the optics of the $549 Samyang, and thinks it’s better than Canon’s 135mm f/2L in that regard.

As always, the review is a good one with lots of sample images, as well as a video version of the review. As always with Samyang lenses, it comes down to whether or not you’re willing to sacrifice focus aids such as autofocus and focus confirmation (for Canon) for great optics and a lower price.

Redrock Micro To Introduce Auto Focus Tracking System?

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

A new video leaked today showing prototype technology that looks to potentially solve focusing for video. A Commercial and bts from Dustin Poteet – MoVI operator – demonstrates technology from Redrock Micro on a Canon 5D MKII that continuously tracks focus on any subject and between subjects. The prototype seems to use Redrock’s existing microRemote wireless remote focus and microTape sonar rangefinder hooked together. This is billed as a “proof of concept” that is better than Canon’s own dual pixel because it works on any camera and lens, focuses on any type of subject (not just faces), works under any lighting conditions, and has a “very fluid and organic feel to it.”

There were no specifications about the technology in the video, but I suspect we’ll be hearing more about it next month at NAB.

Exploring the EOS 5DS: Fernando Guerra on Architecture

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

CPN has posted another article about the Canon EOS 5DS with thoughts from a Canon Explorer of Light. This time Fernando Guerra expresses his feelings about the camera and how it does with his architectural photography workflow. I imagine the EOS 5DS will be the choice over the EOS 5DS R for this time of work. There’s a much higher chance of moire effects when shooting architecture, and a lot of photographers don’t want to add another step to their processing time.

An 50.6mp EOS-1 Body Being Explored [CR2]

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

We’re told that Canon is exploring making an EOS-1 style body with the latest (or variation of) 50.6mp sensor by Canon. “Exploring” doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, and it won’t happen before the EOS-1D X Mark II is announced.

Review: Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the brand new Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC lens.

Bryan says:

For those wanting a full frame ultra-wide angle focal length range (or any focal length under 24mm) with an f/2.8 aperture and image stabilization, there is no other option. Fortunately, that sole option is a good one. The Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC Lens’ introduction raised eyebrows and, with the performance this lens is turning in, those eyebrows remain raised.

Canon Cinema EOS 700x Rumor Returns [CR0]

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

The Canon Cinema EOS 700x rumor has resurfaced, along with quite the press release. We said this was a nonsense rumor last month and we’re still saying that today. I’m floored at the time people spend to fabricate things.

There is no Cinema EOS 700x coming.

I don’t like posting stuff like this, but my inbox will fill up if I don’t.

Canon EOS 5DS R First Impressions

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

Imaging Resource has posted sample images and first impressions of the upcoming Canon EOS 5DS R.

When compared to Nikon’s D810, the Canon shows more detail at base ISO, which is what it’s supposed to do. In the noise category, the EOS 5D Mark III has less of it, but the EOS 5DS R shames it by a fair margin in the detail department. The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R aren’t for low light hand held shooting, but it looks like they’re proving to deliver what they’re supposed to as far as detail goes.

We’re all waiting to see what the real world dynamic range of this new 50.6mp Canon sensor is going to deliver for us.

There’s also comparisons against the Pentax 645Z and Olympus EM-5 II.

Canon Rumors Goes to Scotland

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

I’m heading to Scotland Saturday to hang with Andy Biggs and a bunch of other landscape photography nuts for 10 days of shooting the Isles of Skye, Lewis & Harris as well as Cairngorms. This is almost the perfect time to go with the latest lenses Canon has released, especially the EF 11-24 f/4L and EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II. Do I wish an EOS 5DS R was coming with me? Absolutely!

What’s in my bag for this trip?

Ultra Wide Angle Cinema Lens Coming [CR1]

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

We’re told that Canon will announce at least one new Cinema lens at NAB in April. It will be an ultra wide angle zoom, while focal length is unknown, it will have an aperture of t/3.5, “lowering the cost compared to its t/2.8 cousins”, which makes it sound like it’ll be compact zoom, as the standard wide angle cinema zooms are t/2.6.

We expect a lot more about NAB in the coming weeks as the show gets closer.

For the moment, we can confirm a Cinema EOS C300 Mark II which will record in 4K, as well as a Cinema EOS C500 Mark II coming to Las Vegas next month. We’ve also heard there is going to be a shoulder solution for the Cinema EOS bodies, which sounds like an accessory pack and not a shoulder designed Cinema EOS body. Although, we’ve heard such a camera is in the works.

On the consumer end of the spectrum, we will see a 4K G4H competitor.

More to come…

Review: Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

LensTip.com has completed their review of the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD lens. They compared it directly to the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 and the Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8L II and came away extremely impressed by the Tamron.

In case you’re wondering, early comparisons between the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC and Canon EF 11-24 f/4L have been pretty close optically, although there is a big difference at the wide end in focal length as well distortion control in the Canon’s favour. However, for $1199, it looks like Tamron has a winner on their hands and they’ll probably sell a ton of them.
