Canon USA Price Drops on EOS 5D Mark III & EOS 6D

Posted by on in Canon Rumors
5d3

Feeling the pressure from authorized resellers has probably forced Canon USA to significantly lower MAP (minimum advertised price) prices on the EOS 5D Mark III & EOS 6D. Both of those cameras have dropped a lot in price probably due to currency fluctuations. Beyond the price drops, Canon has also switched the mail-in rebate to an instant rebate and added the EOS 7D Mark II to that. Are these reductions enough to get people away from grey market cameras out there? I’m not sure.

The State of the Camera Industry in 2014

Posted by on in Canon Rumors

LensVid.com has posted their yearly infographic showing the state of the photographic industry last year. They use the data from the CIPA statistics that were recently released.

Click for Larger

Click for Larger

Here are a few key points (from LensVid):

Camera manufacturing/sales (all types) went down in 2014 by 31% (in 2013 we looked at close to a 40% drop). Lenses manufacturing/sales (for DSLR/mirrorless cameras) went down in 2014  by 12% (in 2013 it went down by %20). Japan is still a huge photography market (13% of all cameras and 14% of all lenses sell in Japan which has less than 2% of the world’s population), however the rest of Asia is the only place which seems to gain any momentum in 2014. Mirrorless cameras (despite all the hype) are still just 7% of the entire camera market (up from a mere 5% in 2013). Compact cameras are a dying breed – going down from a 108 million units in 2010 to only 29 million in 2014 (and this number is likely to go down even further in 2015). Predicting the future of the camera market proved challenging in the past – IDC (the American market research, analysis and advisory firm) failed to predict what will happen to the mirrorless camera market. In 2012 they concluded that in 2014 we will see no less than 13 million mirrorless cameras sold worldwide. Only 3 million mirrorless cameras were actually sold…

First Tests: Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L a Winner

canon1124

LensRentals.com has completed their initial tests of the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM. They have come away extremely impressed and they look forward to further testing and most importantly, making images with it.

From LensRentals.com

As you can see, the center t 16mm has an even higher resolution than the two extreme ends, although the edges are just a bit weaker.

But all of that is hair-splitting; this is a remarkable lens. Canon made the widest full-frame rectilinear lens available, and made it with superb image quality throughout the zoom range. Once again, hat’s off to Canon’s lens designers.

Review: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

Posted by on in Canon Rumors
canon1004002

Professional nature photography Kevin Ebi took some time to write an interesting review of the brand new EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II.

Here is a summary of some of Kevin’s thoughts.

The Mark II doesn’t zoom quite as far. The extreme telephoto end of the new 100-400 is a little more than 2% shorter than the Mark I. There is not a huge difference in image quality at the center of the two generation of lenses, but at the corners, there is less distortion in the Mark II. Sharpness is improved, but it’s not a mind-blowing improvement. (A lot of people on your forums ask how it compares to a 70-200 Mark II with a doubler; it provides a readily visible improvement over that setup.) The 100-400 II does suffer a bit from the “onion rings” phenomenon, but I don’t think it ruins any images. In fact, it’s no worse than the 600mm f/4 IS. The weather conditions that allowed me to photograph the phenomenon evaporated fast, so I couldn’t compare it to the Mark I. A minimum focusing distance of 3 feet/1 meter may seem overkill for a lens primarily used for wildlife, but it has opened new creative possibilities for me. For birds that you are able to get close to — either through opportunity or through remote rigs — it lets you capture sharp subjects with stunningly beautifully backgrounds.

Canon Cinema EOS C700x Rumor a Fake

Posted by on in Canon Rumors
cinemaeosc700x

A rumor showing a Canon Cinema EOS C700x starting popping up around the web and in our inbox yesterday. We have confirmed our initial suspicions that this is a fake.

The camera in the image is the C500 PL mount with some “work” done to fit the larger 34mm sensor and a longer base to fit the “X”, which in itself makes no sense. We’re also told that most PL lenses wouldn’t work with a 34mm wide sensor.

We have confirmed that the EOS C300 Mark II and EOS C500 Mark II will be coming to NAB 2015 in April. We have not heard of any other “Cinema EOS” branded products coming for the show, but that could change.

We weren’t told any specifications for the Cinema EOS C500 Mark II.

Tamrom 15-30 VC f/2.8 vs. Canon 16-35 f/2.8 II vs Nikon 14-24 f/2.8

Posted by on in Canon Rumors
tamron1530comparison

Roger and Aaron at LensRentals.com have completed a comparison test between the Tamrom 15-30 VC f/2.8, Canon 16-35 f/2.8 II and Nikon 14-24 f/2.8. Some of you may find the results quite surprising. One thing is for certain, the upcoming Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L better be extremely impressive if it costs almost 3 times more than the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC while being a stop slower.

From LensRentals.com

At the wide end of the zoom range, the optical differences are complex. In the middle 2/3 of the field the Tamron holds its own or is a bit better, but it’s not quite as good in the corners. At the long end (30-35mm) the Canon lens is better than the Tamron. At 23mm, though, the Tamron is as good as the legendary Nikon 14-24, and clearly better than the Canon 16-35. And, of course, the Tamron comes at a significantly lower price than either of the manufacturer’s lenses.

Review: Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD

Posted by on in Canon Rumors
tamron1530

Dustin Abbott has completed his review of the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD lens. This is a brand new fast wide angle lens for full frame cameras from Tamron. I have yet to shoot with this lens, but it’s aggressively priced and looks to be a stellar performer.

From Dustin

“Consider me impressed. Tamron has brought a lot of goodness to bear here, and this lens is a serious competitor for the best in its class. Some will find the inability to use traditional filters a deal-breaker, and I will confess this is my primary disappointment. I fully suspect that aftermarket square filter systems will fill that void, just as they have for the Nikkor and the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. The size will also be a concern for those who are counting the ounces for backpacking and/or travel. But if neither of those things spoil your interest, you will find a lens that is, in my mind, now the most compelling option available if you own a Canon and still very intriguing if you own a Nikon.” Read the full review

Patent: Improved EF to EF-M Adaptor

Posted by on in Canon Rumors
patentefefmadaptor

A new patent for an EF to EF-M adaptor has appeared. It looks like the new adaptor will have improved AF speed with EF lenses mounted. As many of you know, the current adaptor is pretty sluggish in that regard.

The patent makes a point of saying there will be improved performance for video and liveview. Could the video improvement be for dual pixel AF? Could this patent be related to the GH4 competitor we’ve been told would launch at NAB?

The patent details are after the break….

A Suggestion on the EOS-1D C Replacement

Posted by on in Canon Rumors
5d3

I missed this a few weeks ago, but over at Northlight, they posted that there would be an EOS 5D C instead of a direct EOS-1D C replacement. This is said to be due to lack of sales for the $12,000 (at launch) cinema DSLR.

From Northlight

we’re told that the ‘general purpose’ 5D4 will come along with 5D C specialist video DSLR. 1D C sales have not been good enough to get the return on development of a new version.

That idea may shed some light on what we posted yesterday in regards to a test camera that shoots 4K in a 5D sized body. I’ll say again, the source stressed that such a camera may not appear as a consumer product, just that it has been tested.

We will note that Canon has said themselves that they’re going to make more focused products in the DSLR space, and not worry about pleasing everyone with every camera.

Possible Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Spec Talk [CR2]

Posted by on in Canon Rumors
5d3

We’re told the following specifications are for a camera that may turn out to be the EOS 5D Mark IV, but for the moment it is just a test camera that may never get to market in this form. We’re expecting a replacement to the EOS 5D Mark III some time in the final quarter of 2015.

A camera currently being tested specifications

18mp Full Frame CMOS ISO 100-204,800 61 AF Points (all crosstype) 12fps Dual CFast 4K Video Capture

It was stressed that the above is NOT the EOS-1D X Mark II. There will be a quantum leap in fps, dynamic range and a bump in resolution for that camera. We’re told that there’s a possibility that a replacement to the EOS 5D Mark III could be called the EOS 5D X, but no final decision has been made on that.

I stress again that this is a reported test camera that may never come to market, and it is unknown how old this test camera is.
